Brown Spots Q & A

What are brown spots?

Brown spots are also called age spots or liver spots. They’re areas of darkened pigmentation that most commonly occur on the backs of the hands, the face, and other areas that are more often exposed to the sun.

Brown spots are the result of an excessive amount of dark pigmentation, or melanin in the skin.

What causes brown spots?

Numerous factors are said to cause or contribute to the development of brown spots, including:

  • Sun exposure
  • Skin aging
  • Excessive ultraviolet light exposure, such as tanning beds

People of any sex, race, or age can get brown spots, but they’re more common in people who:

  • Are over age 40
  • Have fair skin
  • Have had excessive sun exposure
  • Have a history of frequently using tanning beds

Brown spots can vary in color, and texturally, they’re the same as the rest of your skin. Brown spots aren’t painful, but for some, they can be a cosmetic nuisance.

How can I remove or reduce brown spots?

There are numerous ways to effectively reduce the appearance of — or even eliminate — brown spots, and in many cases, using multiple different treatments and undergoing multiple sessions of said treatments is necessary for optimal results.

Dr. Chin uses IPL, or intense pulsed light --  a popular treatment that works to reduce hyperpigmentation and sun damage. IPL delivers light energy to target chromophores, which are cells with color in your skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy and the heat damages the area.

IPL stimulates the production of collagen, elastin, and your body's healing response. Not only does this diminish brown spots, but it also yields a fresh, plump, smooth texture to your complexion. Dr. Chin uses the innovative MaxG® optimized light handpiece — the most advanced and effective in IPL technology.

Dr. Chin also provides Fractora treatments for patients — a successful combination of microneedling and laser skin resurfacing — and AcuPulse® — the state-of-the-art CO2 fractional laser that works to reduce brown spots.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Chin discusses the various treatment options in-depth and gives you the chance to ask questions. He devises individualized treatment plans that map out your road to achieving your cosmetic goals.
